The telangiectasias or vein spiders are bright red injuries of 1-4 mm in diameter that turn pale on pressure.
They can be seen on the face, nasopharyngeal and buccal mucosa and limbs, especially the lower ones. They may be idiopathic, that is, not linked to any other disease, or either be secondary to other disorders, some of them severe, such as Rendu-Osler-Weber.
The vast majority of them are just unaesthetic and their appearance is related to hormonal abnormalities, pregnancy, menopause or simply aging.
They do not usually involve health problems nor bear any risks, with few exceptions. However, they are very unaesthetic. They often begin to appear on the outer side of the thighs forming a venous crown, on the behind the knees and in the popliteal fossa and may extent throughout the whole lower limb. They rarely appear on the chest or abdomen but they are much more visible on the face, especially on nostrils and cheeks.
They are often associated with other types of vein dilatations: reticular varicose veins, bluish in color and slightly larger in diameter than the telangiectasias.
None of these venous dilatations become large varicose veins, or are at risk of phlebitis or ulceration of the skin, although during pregnancy they tend to produce heaviness, local heat and sometimes dermatitis.
From a strict health point of view most of them do not require treatment, only in those cases where the above symptoms are suffered. In these cases the combination of normal compression stockings and venotonics are usually enough.
From a cosmetic perspective the treatments have changed in recent years and the most effective are made with combined techniques of sclerosis and laser, achieving in this way that these spider veins disappear more quickly and more prolonged.
In any case, there is no treatment capable of avoiding the appearing of new spider veins over time because today there are no treatments capable of slowing down the aging of our body. That is, all these treatments only serve to relieve discomfort, if any, and improve the aspect of our legs or face, which is where we will primarily find them.
